Yesterday marked a proud and significant milestone as we officially launched the Fresh Foods Market Project under ICLEI Africa — with CaDev leading the implementation of the Solid Waste Management component at Chilenje Market.
The event was honoured by the presence of Her Worship the Mayor Chilando Chitangala, the Chilenje Ward Councillor Honorable Reuben Mwenya, and ICLEI representatives Luke Metelerkamp the Head: African City Food Centre, Amy Murgatroyd the Pillar Lead: Food Markets & Infrastructure and Meembo Changula the Senior Professional Officer: Urban Planning, whose leadership and support have been instrumental throughout this journey.
This launch highlights the power of collaboration in shaping cleaner, safer, and more sustainable markets. As part of the project handover, CaDev unveiled:
✅ A newly redesigned waste bay, featuring an improved waste sorting and storage system
✅ Strategically installed waste collection points placed across the market
✅ Strengthened systems aimed at promoting sustainability and efficiency in daily waste waste management.
This moment reflects our collective commitment to transforming market environments and enhancing the livelihoods of the communities they serve. Proud to be part of building a more sustainable future for Chilenje Market.
